The much-anticipated third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, 28 Years Later, will be hitting theaters next summer, bringing a chilling new chapter in the series. The recently released trailer has offered fans a glimpse into the terrifying world that has been eagerly awaited.
The movie is set nearly three decades after the first outbreak of this rage virus that wiped out half of humanity. The remaining survivor now lives in isolation on a remote island away from the horrors of the world. However, this little haven is broken when they discover that one of its members goes back to that land and finds horrifying mutated creatures both among the walkers and the survivors. Its haunting tagline “Time didn’t heal anything,” underscores the dark undertones of the movie.

The trailer opens innocently enough—children watching Teletubbies on an old TV. But the cheerful scene quickly gives way to chaos. Under a haunting rendition of Rudyard Kipling’s Boots, viewers are bombarded with intense flashes of action: shattered church windows, fields strewn with crosses, and chilling graffiti quoting the Bible—“Behold, he is coming with the clouds,” alongside “Jimmy” scrawled nearby.
This has led to speculation that “Jimmy” refers to Cillian Murphy’s character Jim from 28 Days Later. A shadowy zombie-like figure of him briefly appears in the trailer, fuelling further speculation. With Murphy listed as an executive producer on the film but not the cast, many speculate about the possibility of a cameo appearance.
The cast is led by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) as they battle hordes of infected in gripping sequences. Highlights include Comer cradling a baby, Taylor-Johnson wielding a bow, and eerie glimpses of piles of skulls and mummified figures.
Fans are also thrilled that the franchise’s original creators, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle, are coming back, having signed up as producers. 28 Years Later will be just that: more of a legacy of what its predecessors established, bringing intense survival drama and profound horror. June 20 is when it hits theaters.
