Heavy torrential rains, floods and landslides in Jammu & Kashmir, 3 Killed, Schools Remain Closed

Several elements of Jammu & Kashmir witnessed heavy torrential rains on Sunday, leading to flash floods and landslides, with the Ramban district being one of the worst hit because of the inclement climate. At least 3 people had been killed in the Ramban district after their homes had been swept away in a landslide in the Bagna village region. About 30 houses had been washed away, vehicles destroyed, and the 250 km-long Jammu-Srinagar toll road (NH44) became blocked from each end.

IMD Issue Weather Alerts in Jammu & Kashmir

IMD had warned of heavy to very heavy rain over the Union territory earlier in the week. HT had said on April 16 that a western disturbance was coming near the Western Himalayan vicinity, with the weather turning hostile, particularly over Jammu & Kashmir, from April 18 to 20.

  • In view of the high climate conditions, schools throughout Jammu & Kashmir valley will remain closed on April 21, Jammu and Kashmir’s (J-K) education minister Sakina Itoo has announced.
  • “In mild of the persevering with severe climate situations and forecasts, it’s been decided that classwork in all schools of the valley shall continue to be suspended for in the future the following day (21st April). This decision has been taken as a precautionary step to ensure the protection and well-being of all students,” the minister state.
  • In the Ramban district, groups from the police, SDRF, civil volunteers, Army and different stakeholder departments and agencies, except volunteers from local NGOs, have been actively engaged in rescue operations.
