State government authorities seized about 14 tonnes of spoiled meat from a storage facility in the Mangalhat area on Wednesday. The unit’s owner arrested.
Mangalhat police, along with the Golconda Task Force, the H-FAST team, and GHMC officials, conducted the surprising raid. This operation raised important concerns about food safety in the city.
What did the Mangalhat officials find?
Acting on a tip, officials searched the premises of ‘A to Z Sheep & Goat Offals’ in the Chisti Chaman Dargah area near RK Pet. During the inspection, they found a large stock of spoiled meat kept in unsanitary conditions. The owner, 41-year-old Mohammad Afroz taken into custody.
Low-quality meat bought from other states
Initial investigations showed that Afroz was buying low-quality and spoiled meat from states like Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Maharashtra at lower prices.
The rotten meat then shipped to Hyderabad, stored, and allegedly supplied to several well-known hotels and restaurants in the city. Authorities noted that the accused had been running this illegal supply chain for some time, which posed a serious risk to public health.
Officials said, “We committed to taking strict action against those who endanger public health for profit,” after the raid. They seized and destroyed the entire 14-tonne stock to keep it from reaching the market.
