Google introduced a new version of its popular Nano Banana image generation model. The company claims it offers faster performance as it seeks to attract more users to its AI tools.
The model, called Nano Banana 2, will be available across several products. These include the Gemini app, AI Mode and Lens features on Search, and Flow, its AI-powered video tool.

This launch marks the latest step in a series of efforts that have put Google at the leading edge of the AI competition. This strategy has helped the company compete better with OpenAI’sChatGPT after facing some setbacks early on. These successes have led to a 47% increase in its stock over the past six months.
Google released the original Nano Banana AI image editor in August. It quickly gained popularity, drawing 13 million new users to the Gemini app in just four days in September. By mid-October, it had produced over 5 billion images.

Nano Banana 2 builds on Gemini’s faster and less expensive models called Flash, which allows for quicker image generation and editing. Google noted that it also has improved instruction-following abilities and produces sharper details.
In November, Google introduced its Gemini 3 AI model, which performed so well that it led rival OpenAI to issue an internal alert to speed up its own development.
Gemini 3 has increased user engagement, helping the Gemini app reach over 750 million monthly active users by the end of December.
