Aadhaar Card Update under UIDAI rules: Not valid for THESE activities

With Aadhaar Card linked to almost every essential service, many people are still unsure if it can prove their date of birth or Indian citizenship. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified multiple times that the 12-digit Aadhaar number can only serve as proof of identity, not citizenship.

However, rumours persist about the uses of Aadhaar. To clear up the confusion, the UIDAI has reiterated that while Aadhaar establishes a person’s identity, it cannot serve as proof of domicile or citizenship.

“An Aadhaar number used for establishing the identity of the Aadhaar number holder subject to authentication or offline verification,” said a recent order from the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications.

What services require Aadhaar? 

Aadhaar Card is now essential for several financial and government services. Many benefits and transactions cannot happen without providing your Aadhaar number.

It is mandatory to file income tax returns (ITRs), link PAN, open bank accounts, and purchase new mobile SIM cards. Aadhaar also required for certain investments, such as mutual funds and other instruments that involve KYC verification. Most government subsidies and welfare schemes also require Aadhaar authentication.
