Assam Government Bans Shyamkanu Mahanta After Zubeen Garg's Drowning in Singapore

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Government has banned Syamkanu Mahanta from organizing functions or festivals in Assam. He shared this on X and said, “The State Government has decided to prohibit Shri Syamkanu Mahanta and any organization linked to him from holding any functions or festivals within the State of Assam.”

He added that the government would not provide any financial support for events related to Mahanta. “Additionally, the State Government not provide any financial grants, advertising, or sponsorship for any event he is connected to, whether directly or indirectly,” he mentioned in his post. CM Sarma also said, “The State Government will request the Government of India not to provide any financial help or sponsorship to him in any way.”

Drowning accident in Singapore led to Mahanta’s Ban

Shyamkanu Mahanta is the main organizer of the North East India Festival in Singapore, to which Zubeen Garg also invited. Mahanta took Zubeen Garg to Singapore for the event, where the 52-year-old icon from Assam tragically drowned on 19 September.

Multiple FIRs filed against Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and Shyamkanu Mahanta at various police stations throughout the state. The Assam Government has instructed the CID to investigate all these FIRs.
