Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met with the family of Hariom Valmiki, the Dalit man who lynched in Raebareli, on Friday. The victim’s uncle, Chaudhary Bhakt Das, said that Gandhi spoke with family members.

Valmiki, 40, lynched by villagers who mistook him for a thief during a night vigil around 1 am on October 2. This happened amid rumors that a gang was using drones for surveillance to identify houses for robberies. The incident caused widespread outrage, with opposition parties, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, blaming the BJP government for not protecting Dalits and preventing mob violence.
Police arrest 14 individuals in case
After the attack, police opened a case and have arrested 14 people. It includes the main suspect, who was caught during an encounter on October 10. Five police officers, including two sub-inspectors suspended due to issues in handling the case.
Rahul Gandhi arrived at Chakeri airport and traveled about 80 km by road to Fatehpur to meet the deceased’s family. Before his visit, the government offered a contractual staff nurse position to Hariom’s sister, Kusum, at Fatehpur Medical College. Tight security measures were in place for his visit, with the lane to Valmiki’s house barricaded.
