Supreme Court lawyer Rohit Pandey condemned the incident. He speculated that the attack was a response to CJI Gavai’s alleged remarks about religious deities. “I strongly condemn this act and urge strict action against the accused,” he said.
CJI Gavai’s remarks about a Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho sparked controversy. On September 16, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea to reconstruct and reinstall a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple. The court called it “publicity interest litigation.”
“It is clearly publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then pray and meditate,” the CJI said.

The bench said the issue fell under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). “It is a archaeological find, whether the ASI permit such a thing to be done or not. There are various issues,” the CJI added. He also noted, “In the meantime, if you don’t mind Shaivism, you can go and worship there. There is a very big linga of Shiva, one of the biggest in Khajuraho.”
His comments led to significant backlash on social media, sparking calls for clarification. The Chief Justice later explained that his words had been “misrepresented” and emphasized his respect for all religions.
