LPG Shortage Panic in Delhi Triggers Migrant Workers’ Mass Return to Home Towns

Fear and panic have taken hold of the public in Delhi after reports of an LPG gas shortage. The government and oil companies keep insisting there is no gas scarcity, but people remain skeptical. As a result, chaos and confusion have spread through the city.

Migrant workers return to home, due to LPG shortage in Delhi

The impact has been hardest on the poor and migrant workers. Those working as domestic help or engaging in small roadside trades have started returning to their home villages. They worry that if the situation gets worse or if a lockdown happens, they won’t be able to secure food and other basic needs.

Some people are still in the city, but they are unsure whether to stay or go back home.

Gas Prices and the Black Market

Panic has led to a sudden spike in demand for gas cylinders. This surge has caused black market activity. While a regular cylinder costs around ₹913, people are now paying as much as ₹4,000 on the black market.

Out of fear, many are ordering more cylinders than they actually need, putting a lot of strain on the current supply chain.

Long lines have formed outside gas agencies and petrol stations throughout the city. Many individuals are now waiting as long as 25 to 30 days to get their cylinders. This situation also negatively affects the earnings of daily wage workers, who must spend hours waiting in line.
