After years of construction, delays, and complicated engineering work, the long-awaited ‘Missing Link’ on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will open on May 1. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to inaugurate the project on Maharashtra Day.
Mumbai -Pune Expressway Missing link opens on 1 May
Before the launch, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde inspected the project and shared that nearly 99% of the work is complete, with only minor finishing touches remaining. Shinde mentioned that the project will make the Mumbai-Pune Expressway fully access-controlled, relieve congestion in the ghat section, and improve safety and travel efficiency.
He confirmed that he assessed the construction quality personally and found it up to standard, noting that the remaining minor tasks would finish within the next few days.
What Is The ‘Missing Link’ Project?
The 13.3-km Missing Link is a new section that connects Khopoli on the Mumbai side to Kusgaon near Lonavala. It designed to avoid the old Bhor Ghat and Khandala segments. It is also called for sharp curves, steep gradients, traffic jams, and accident risks. The project aims to redirect traffic away from the winding ghat route, which has long been one of the toughest parts of the corridor.
Once it opens, the new road will cut the journey by about 6 km and lower travel time between Mumbai and Pune by 20 to 30 minutes, with even greater time savings during peak traffic and holiday rushes.
