Protest Turns Violent: 14 JNU Students Arrested After Clash With Police

Fourteen students from JNU were arrested after a protest march turned violent with the Delhi Police on 26 February 2026. The demonstration, organized by the JNU Students’ Union, led to injuries for both police officers and students. Those arrested included current and former union leaders. An FIR filed at Vasant Kunj North Police Station under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

14 JNU Students Arrested in protest

According to The Hindu, the arrested students included JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, vice-president GopikaBabu, former president Nitish Kumar, and joint secretary Danish Ali. The charges against them included assault or using criminal force, obstructing a public servant, and intentionally causing harm.

As reported by Hindustan Times, a Delhi court granted bail to all 14 arrested students the next morning. The protest began as a “Long March” toward the Ministry of Education but was stopped at the JNU main gate. This led to a confrontation when students broke through police barricades.

Administration denied permission

The JNU university administration had denied permission for the protest outside the campus. Despite this, around 400 to 500 students gathered and tried to march, prompting a heavy police presence and barricades at the main gate.

Police said the protest became violent when students allegedly damaged barricades and threw banners, sticks, and shoes. They also claimed that some students physically attacked officers, including biting a few. Several police officers, including senior personnel, were injured during the incident.
