The video recorded by patients at Gonda Medical College and said to be about two days old, shows at least five large rats running around the ward. The rats were seen on patients’ beds, tables, and near the oxygen pipeline, which caused panic. In response to the clip, District Magistrate Priyanka Niranjan directed medical college Principal Dhananjay Shrikant Kotasthane to take immediate and strict action.

Following these orders, anti-rodent medicine was sprayed in the wards. The district administration has also called for a detailed investigation of the incident.
The principal stated that food brought into the wards by patients’ attendants attracts rats. He assured that any negligence regarding patient safety would not be tolerated. After spraying the medicine in all wards, he noted that the rats have disappeared, although the investigation is ongoing.
Cleaning starts as per administration
The administration of Gonda Medical College has also announced several preventive measures. According to the new rules, only one attendant per patient will allowed in the wards except during visiting hours, and entry of multiple attendants will be limited. Carrying large amounts of food into the wards is now prohibited. Medical Superintendent D N Singh mentioned that instructions issued to start a thorough cleanliness drive in all wards.
