As large parts of India endure a severe heatwave and the country is recognized as one of the hottest places in the world, Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia suggested that people carry an onion to address the heat.
He claimed that he never uses air conditioning at home or in his car, stating that his ‘Chambal skin’ is enough to handle the heat, with a little help from a onion. He even pulled an onion from the pocket of his kurta and proudly displayed it to his audience in Shivpuri, MP, who applauded him.
Scindia Onion-in-Pocket Tip Strategy
A video shared by a verified X user, Veena Jain, quickly went viral, and reactions were harsh. Many photographs emerged online showing Scindia attending meetings in conference rooms with visible air conditioners. Pictures of the luxurious Scindia palace, which has 400 rooms in Gwalior, also circulated, leading people to mock the minister for making a clearly false claim.
This incident reminded some of Modi’s comments about his radiant skin, which he attributed to sweat and perspiration.
Carry onion in pocket to beat heat
One comment read, “Imagine a Union minister of India, in 2026, telling a nation suffering from a heatwave to stuff onions in their pockets. Not a cooling center. Not a heat action plan. Not climate policy.
“BJP’s own 2024 manifesto mentioned climate change. Not a single measurable heatwave relief goal. And their minister’s solution is medieval folklore. This is what happens when people in power lose touch with reality. Wake up, India. An onion is not a heat action plan. It’s an insult dressed as advice,” was one of the more pointed criticisms.
