Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has nominated for an award named after Veer Savarkar. This situation could create another conflict between the Thiruvananthapuram MP and his party. However, Tharoor declined the honor, citing a lack of clarification about the award’s nature and the organization behind it.
“I am not going,” he said when asked about attending. He later explained his position in an online post.

“In the absence of clarifications about the nature of the award, the organization presenting it, or any other relevant details, there is no question of my attending the event today or accepting the award,” he added.
The Veer Savarkar International Impact Award 2025 is established by the NGO High Range Rural Development Society (HRDS), with Tharoor as its first recipient.
Criticize the organizers for not informing him
Shashi Tharoor criticized the organizers for not consulting him before announcing that he was a recipient. “It was irresponsible for the organizers to announce my name without my having agreed to receive it,” he said.
“Despite that, today in Delhi, some media outlets continue to ask the same question,” his post noted. Meanwhile, his party members believe that no Congress member should accept an award in Veer Savarkar’s name.
K Muraleedharan, a veteran Congress member from Kerala, stated that accepting the award would insult and embarrass the Congress. The BJP and the wider right wing view Vinayak Damodar ‘Veer’ Savarkar as a revolutionary icon, but the Congress questions his role in the freedom movement.
