Heavy rain caused chaos not just in Jammu, which experienced flash floods and landslides, but also in the Kashmir Valley. The infrastructure suffered greatly, with bridges collapsing and mobile towers and electricity poles breaking like twigs.

Roads blocked, trains cancelled due to Vaishno Devi Landslide

Telecom services failed in many parts of the union territory. Millions lost communication, which worsened the situation, officials reported. Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar and Kishtwar-Doda national highways halted, and dozens of hill roads blocked or damaged by landslides or flash floods. Many trains to and from Jammu were canceled.

The path to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hill devastated. 9 people died when the mountainside suddenly gave way around 3 p.m., and 21 others were injured. Officials feared that several people trapped as rescuers hurried to pull out those buried under the debris near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari.

Authorities suspend the Himkoti trek route yatra

The landslide struck about halfway along the winding 12 km trek from Katra town to the hilltop shrine. There are two routes to the shrine. The yatra on the Himkoti trek route suspended since morning, while the old route remained open until 1:30 p.m., when authorities decided to close it as a precaution due to the rain.

Kiran, from Mohali in Punjab, was among those caught in the hail of stones, trees, and boulders. “I was coming down the hill after Vaishno Devi darshan when people started shouting. I saw stones falling down. I tried to run but injured,” Kiran said PTI from a hospital bed in Katra.
