The Karnataka HC paused the criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old engineering student, who is the son of an expelled BJP leader. He faces accusations of raping his classmate under the false promise of marriage. The court ordered him to pay ₹75,000 each month to support the complainant and their 10-month-old child, even though they are not married or currently in a relationship.
Karnataka HC orders rape accused to pay Rs 75,000 monthly to victim
Justice M Nagaprasanna mentioned that while the case seemed to involve a consensual physical relationship, and usually the court would have paused the proceedings entirely, this situation required a different approach. The complainant has no means to support herself or her child.
The court instructed the accused to pay this amount himself if he can or to have his parents cover it.
Temporary order to pause further proceedings
“If it were just a case of consensual acts between two adults, and it hadn’t resulted in a child being born, who is almost 10 months old, and left the mother and baby abandoned, this court would have paused the matter completely. The circumstances are different.
There will be a temporary order to pause further proceedings, on the condition that the petitioner, either directly or through his parents, pays ₹75,000 each month for the victim and the child until the next court date,” Justice Nagaprasanna said.
