Man drags ex-wife to court upon massive demand for ₹13 crore maintenance

In a recent legal development in India, a man has dragged his ex-wife to court. It was only a six-month-old marriage back in 2014, and the case has now been turned into a legal battle between a couple in Bombay. The wife earns at Google and draws ₹33 lakh every month, demanding ₹13 crore as her maintenance for the short-lived marriage.

The case revolves around the demand for ₹13 crore maintenance by the wife when she is financially well-off herself. They tied the knot in 2014. However, for reasons best known to them, they live apart for six months after marriage. It’s been years since, however, the husband raised this issue before the court after a decade.

He has questioned whether the wife was entitled to ₹13 crore in maintenance. The man claims earnings increased manifold post the separation and she played no role in his success during the marriage. He argued in front of the judge that,

‘My lord, what is her contribution in six months of marriage?’

The husband also mentioned certain accusations that had arisen against his father, which he said could not be discussed in public. He then adds that his wife was very highly qualified and employed at Google. Hence, she needed nothing even close to such a huge maintenance amount.

Public divided on wife’s demand for ₹13 crore maintenance

However, it seemed in the video that is widely distributed that the judge granted support to the demand raised by the wife’s demand for ₹13 crore maintenance without any kind of discussion of a legal framework. This case divides the public. Many criticize the demand of the wife for labelling it excessive to an unreasonably high figure and at no cost in terms of children being involved.

Others believe that interim payments should be included in permanent alimony.Hher previous marital financial status should be taken into account for settlement.

It has been contended that this means that the judiciary does not have a fear of the law itself because of delayed responses in such cases. Although a small percentage believes that the demand for ₹13 crore maintenance is justified if the husband can afford it. The case has remained unresolved with no final judgment over the maintenance demand of such a hefty amount. The public awaits the call.
