Supreme Court Approves Aadhaar for Bihar Voter Checks

The Supreme Court instructed the EC to accept the Aadhaar card as a 12th document that can serve as ID proof for adding names to the revised voters’ list of Bihar. It means individuals can use the Aadhaar card by itself to be included in the voters’ list. The Court also made it clear that the Aadhaar card does not confirm citizenship.

Supreme Court pass Aadhaar approvals

In the Bihar Special Intensive Revision matter, the Court directed the Election Commission to inform its officials about the rules regarding Aadhaar acceptance. Additionally, the Court said that Election Commission officials can verify the authenticity of Aadhaar cards submitted by voters. The Court noted that the Election Commission committed to accepting the Aadhaar card as proof of identity.

A bench led by Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued the order after the RJD and other petitioners argued that Election Commission officials were not recognizing the Aadhaar card as a stand-alone document for the electoral roll. They insisted on documents from the eleven specified by the Election Commission in its SIR notification.
