Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the specific seat distribution for the southern states following the proposed expansion of the Lok Sabha to include women’s reservation. He said that each state’s seat allocation will increase uniformly by about 50% to maintain its proportional representation in the Lok Sabha.
Amit Shah revised Lok Sabha Seat Allocation
Amit Shah shared this information during the Lok Sabha session on Thursday, April 16, which addressed three bills aimed at implementing women’s reservation and redrawing constituency boundaries.
“There’s confusion spreading that these three bills will reduce South India’s representation in the Lok Sabha and negatively impact these states. I will provide the government’s response to the debate tomorrow. But I don’t want any confusion for the people of the country even tonight,” Amit Shah said.
Expand to 850 seats
When asked why the Lok Sabha should expand to 850 seats as proposed in the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, Amit Shah explained that the aim was to increase the previous Lok Sabha size by around 50%. This way, after accounting for one-third of the seats reserved for women, the remaining two-thirds would be similar to the original size.
He noted that with the expansion to 850 seats, when one-third are reserved for women, the remaining “open” seats would nearly match the LokSabha’s prior strength of 543.
