In a surprise political flip, people of Jammu and Kashmir have reject Congress as the party could only manage to lead in a measly 6 seats in the current assembly elections. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is doing very well, already in the lead on 29 seats, whereas the National Conference (NC) has emerged as the highest tally with 41 seats. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leads on 4 seats and other parties collectively hold 7 seats.
People of Jammu and Kashmir reject Congress, Gandhi’s party faces same fate in Haryana
It is the first exit poll since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, and trends suggest there is a fundamental rejection of Congress in Jammu & Kashmir, a trend similar to Haryana. BJP is doing well not only in Jammu & Kashmir but is ahead in 50 seats in Haryana as well. All is set for sweeping victories in this region.
The Jammu & Kashmir political landscape rejects the Congress for coalition government as NC seems poised to form a coalition government with the party. But despite all this, Congress and its poor show severely diminishes all the achievements it has made if the party is to look at voter sentiments. It is obvious that the change in sentiments has been severe as the elections were held in three phases and an aggregate voter turnout was 63.45%.
This election also signifies one of the strongest strands of political realignment, as the voters of Jammu & Kashmir hardly seemed interested in having Congress as an option. The voters in the region seem to have accepted NC and BJP and left Congress at its periphery. And as the dust sets on this election, it is pretty clear that Jammu & Kashmir is saying one thing today: the people reject Congress in a mass scale and will soon witness a new chapter in their politics.
