Tamil Nadu Governor postponed the Oath ceremony of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay. He mentioned the lack of clear proof of majority support in reason.
Even the Congress supports TVK, but the party’s total is 112, that is still short of 118 to form Government. The delay in oath ceremony rise political negotiations with smaller parties.
Governor insists Vijay on clear majority proof
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has asked Vijay to submit written proof from at least 118 MLAs before he will invite him for oath ceremony. Although Congress’s five seats raise TVK’s total to 112, the Governor remains skeptical and dissolved the Assembly. Sources shows that the delay last 1 to 2 days because he is seeking more support from other parties.
Governor’s options in a hung assembly
The Governor can invite the single-largest party or coalition to form a government under Article 163. He can also request signed letters of support or a floor test to confirm a majority. If no stable majority is present, the Governor can report to the President, which might lead to President’s Rule. Past examples show that Governors often delay invitations to ensure a stable government is formed in hung assemblies.
