Manmohan Singh, the economist-turned-politician who had steered India through historic reforms, was known as much for his intellect as his simplicity. A very moving memory that has struck many, after his death at the age of 92, is one shared by Asim Arun, erstwhile chief of the Special Protection Group (SPG).
Arun, now MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj Sadar, shared on X (formerly Twitter) his reminiscences about Singh’s simple living:. Though he (Manmohan Singh) was the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, Singh cherished a modest possession—a Maruti 800. Arun, who served as Singh’s bodyguard for nearly three years, recalled,
“Dr. Singh owned just one car, a Maruti 800. At the PM’s residence, it would sit quietly behind the shiny black BMWs. He often told me, ‘Asim, this is my car. These luxury ones don’t feel like mine.’
Manmohan Singh had to travel in luxury cars for security reasons but preferred Maruti 800 over them
Though Singh had to travel in SPG-approved vehicles for security reasons, his association with the Maruti 800 symbolized a grounded nature and identification with middle-class values. Arun shared how Singh would look at the car as his convoy passed by, almost as if reaffirming his roots and his association with the common man.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Singh, calling his death a great loss to the nation. In a video message, Modi lauded Singh’s achievements, noting how his journey from Partition struggles to becoming an economic reformer and Prime Minister was a source of inspiration for generations. “His life is a lesson on how one can rise above challenges and deprivation,” Modi said, praising Singh’s commitment to India’s development.
Manmohan Singh’s humility and contributions to India’s progress leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire. His Maruti 800, symbolizing his simple and thoughtful persona, will remain etched in the nation’s memory.
