“Omar Abdullah takes U-turn on Article 370,” reaffirming that Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) cannot remain a Union Territory forever. As the vice-president of the National Conference (NC), he remains committed to restoring statehood. Abdullah expects Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfill his earlier promise of returning statehood to J&K. He stressed this would be the “honourable thing” for the Prime Minister to do, fulfilling a pledge made to the people of the region.

Advocating key issues, Omar Abdullah takes u-turn on Article 370 and said that some tasks could be completed under Union Territory framework but statehood would unlock the full potential of J&K. He demands that restoration be quick so that this new government and the NC manifesto can be put into action.

Abdullah says J&K cannot afford to have an unhealthy relationship with the Delhi cental Govt. He argues that the J&K administration and the Centre need to work in tandem to grapple with the complexities inherent in the region.

It was a frequent refrain during his recent utterances as he is full of hope that PM Modi will deliver on his commitment to statehood. “We may not like the political plank of the BJP, but we must not see ourselves automatically in conflict with the Centre”, he asserted.

What the people voted for was progress, jobs, and statehood, not conflict, Abdullah said. Abdullah and all other political parties like Congress continue to be keen on the restoration of statehood as the basic foundation of the future J&K.

Omar Abdullah, while making a U-turn on Article 370, is very crucial in shaping J&K’s future relationship with the Centre as well as of the political landscape of J&K. His two electoral back-to-back wins have placed him on a firm grip about the continuing quest for statehood and development of Jammu and Kashmir.
