Chief Ministers and leaders from a number of competition events-led states convened in Chennai for the primary assembly of the Joint Action Committee, led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. Stalin clarified that the protest was not against fair delimitation itself however a demand for “honest delimitation.”
He stated, “Our country has diverse cultures. Delimitation based on population figures will have an effect on states like ours, as we have taken steps to manage population growth. This could cause fewer parliamentary seats for us. We have to firmly oppose such a move. This protest isn’t towards delimitation but for fair delimitation.”
What Deputy CM said on fair delimitation
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin echoed this challenge, stating that the participating states had worked tough to control population growth. Instead of being rewarded, they now face the risk of decreased political representation.
“For a long time, these states have introduced guidelines and raised recognition to stabilise population growth. We reached the change cost before many others, while as some states still see fast growth. Yet, in preference to being recognized for our responsible efforts, we threat dropping our voice in Parliament,” he said.
The meeting includes CM and representatives from several states. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in spite of supporting the DMK’s stance on delimitation, did not send any representatives.
Stalin welcomed Telangana CM in event
Before the meeting, CM Stalin welcomed Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. He also honoured Chief Ministers and leaders attending the event. Calling for a united political attempt and fair delimitation, Stalin entreated parties to oppose delimitation, describing it as a “blatant attack on federalism.” He had earlier written to the Chief Ministers of seven states—both from the ruling NDA and the competition—searching for their support.
