Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has strongly supported the struggling leaders of his team, captain Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. The left-hander stated that both players will win matches for India at the T20 World Cup 2026, adding that people will soon gain the trust he has in Gill’s ability.
Suryakumar and Gill are having their worst years in T20Is. Suryakumar has scored only 213 runs at an average of 14.20, with a strike rate of 125.29. This average is the lowest for any captain of a full-member country who has cross 200 T20I runs in a year. Gill has 291 runs at an average of 24.25, with a strike rate of 137.26. He has not scored a single half-century since returning as the opener in September.
Gill and Surya Kumar have poor experience in T20 World Cup
Both players had poor performances in India’s third T20I against South Africa. Gill scored a run-a-ball 28, while Suryakumar added only 12 from 11 balls. They also struggled in the first two matches, increasing the pressure on them to find form with the home World Cup coming up in less than two months.

“I’ll tell you one thing straight away,” Abhishek, who scored 35 off 18 balls, was quoted as in the post-match press conference. “Trust me, Suryakumar and Shubman will win matches for India in the T20 World Cup, as well as in matches leading up to it. I’ve played with them for a long time, especially with Shubman. I know where Shubman can excel and in what conditions, no matter the opponent. I have full trust in him. Very soon, everyone else will see that trust in him, too.”
Suryakumar has dismissed all criticism. After the match, which India won by seven wickets thanks to a strong bowling performance, he stated that he is not out of form because he is batting beautifully in the nets.
