Australia Revamps T20I Squad with Glenn Maxwell Return and Mahli Beardman Debut for India Series

Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell set to make his long-awaited return from injury as selectors announced several changes to both the T20I Squad before the final stages of the white-ball series against India. Maxwell, who fractured his wrist while bowling in the nets before the T20 series in New Zealand in late September, has cleared to play.

He will rejoin the team for the last three matches of the five-match T20I Series. His return gives a significant boost to an Australian team that is balancing injuries, workloads, and preparations for the upcoming Ashes series next month.

Selectors chose a combination of youth and experience as they rotate players between international duties and Sheffield Shield cricket. Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott all released to play in red-ball matches for their respective states. Each is competing for a spot in the Ashes squad when it begins on November 21.

The changes mean Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Philippe, and Mahli Beardman join the T20 setup, while Hazlewood will leave after the second match and Abbott after the third. Beardman’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy. The 20-year-old Western Australian quick is in line for a potential international debut after performing well in domestic cricket this season.

Emerging Talent Beardman Joins ODI Squad Amid Changes for SCG Finale

Beardman, who played a key role in Australia’s 2024 U19 World Cup-winning campaign and taken five wickets in two One-Day Cup games this summer, is considered one of the country’s brightest emerging fast-bowling prospects.

Meanwhile, the ODI squad has also seen changes for the third and final match at the SCG. New South Wales allrounder Jack Edwards has received a call-up along with left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, who returns after missing the Adelaide match. Labuschagne, who drafted in earlier as a replacement for the injured Cameron Green, now return to Queensland for the Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at the Gabba. That match will also feature Steve Smith for the Blues.
