Bangladesh Cricket Board Risks Rs 240 Crore Loss by Boycotting 2026 T20 World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board lose Rs 240 crore (325 crore Bangladeshi Taka, about 27 million US dollars) if they decide to boycott the T20 World Cup 2026 in India. A report from news agency on Thursday (January 22) said that Bangladesh is firm about not traveling to India for their Group C matches in the T20 World Cup 2026. This strong position might also result in a loss of nearly BDT 325 crore (around USD 27 million) from the ICC’s annual revenue.

Additionally, losses from broadcast revenue, sponsorship income, and financial year earnings could also drop significantly, possibly by 60 % or more.

The overall impact might also affect India’s potential tour of Bangladesh in August-September. The TV broadcast rights for that series are worth at least 10 bilateral match-ups against other countries.

A BCB source, who has been closely monitoring developments in Bangladesh cricket for the past three weeks, mentioned that once Asif Nazrul, the government’s sports advisor and legal advisor, took a firm stand, there was no chance of changing their position.

Major loss after boycott T20 World Cup

“During the meeting with Asif Nazrul, the government advisor did most of the talking, with only occasional comments from Bulbul Bhai. The players mostly stayed silent. The senior players believe that if someone as respected as TamimIqbal disrespected, they face an even bigger backlash,” the source told.

Bulbul seemed disheartened after the meeting, unable to persuade Nazrul. “In this situation, with the possibility of Bangladesh not going to the World Cup or given an ultimatum, we still try our best to play in the World Cup,” Bulbul said. However, anyone who watched the press conference could tell that the former national skipper did not sound convincing.
