On Saturday, Batting big name Shubman Gill announced as captain of test cricket phase with the swashbuckling Rishabh Pant as his deputy for next month’s tour of England. At 25 years of age, Gill can be India’s 4th youngest Test captain after Sachin Tendulkar (23), Kapil Dev (24) and Ravi Shastri (25).
The five-match series towards England will start on June 20 in Leeds. “Last years or so we checked out Shubman (for management). We are hopeful he is the men who is going (to take the group ahead). We wish him all of the best,” said chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Rishabh Pant Announced as Test Vice Captain
“Pant is certainly one of our great batters in Test cricket over the past four-five years. A wicketkeeper can see the game well and that is why he’s Shubman’s deputy,” Agarkar added, even as explaining the 27-year-old Pant’s role.
The squad also functions for Karun Nair, who returns to the national set-up after 8 years. Having last played in 2017, Nair dropped from the crew soon after becoming the second triple centurion in Tests from India. A great tour pacer Mohammed Shami, who was not good enough for the long series.
