World chess champion D Gukesh, after his historic victory over Ding Liren, has opened up about his plans for Gukesh’s prize money of ₹11.45 crore. At just 18, Gukesh became the youngest chess world champion, achieving a milestone that reflects not just his talent but also the sacrifices made by his parents.
Gukesh unveiled a lot about the financial struggle in his family to support his chess journey. The father, Rajnikanth, was an ENT surgeon who was leaving a very bright career as he decided to travel along with Gukesh for tournaments, whereas his mother, Padmakumari, worked hard as a microbiologist to sustain the family.
“My parents gave up everything for me. They burned bridges and faced financial challenges just so I could follow my passion,” he shared.
Gukesh’s prize money changes his fortune
Although they were facing such difficult moments, Gukesh claims that his parents’ friends had helped him get out of these situations. These funds enabled him to carry on the competitions when all else seemed to be exhausted. Currently, Gukesh’s prize money has changed his life for his family.
Talking to the media afterward, Gukesh said reflecting on his win,
“This financial stability means the world to my parents and their friends. For me, money was never the focus, but I now understand the significance of it: allowing us to grow up to our best potential.”
The win for Gukesh came in sealed style as he defeated Liren with 7.5-6.5 wins at the World Chess Championship- he said that victory demonstrates his commitment and family influence. He intends to take some of Gukesh’s prize money and give it back to individuals who have stood by him in this journey.
