Gokulam Kerala head coach Antonio Rueda wants better management from AIFF for I-League

Gokulam Kerala head coach Antonio Rueda wants better management from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) over the I-League. Ahead of the season opener against Sreenidi Deccan in the 2024-25 I-League, Rueda expressed frustration over the delayed start to India’s second-tier football league.

“This is something the federation needs to fix. I love working in India but better organization is crucial,” Rueda said during Thursday’s virtual press conference. The Spanish coach stressed that delays disturb clubs and players, especially in the pre-season preparations.

Rueda pointed out that the league was supposed to begin on October 19 according to the AIFF’s 2024-25 Competitions Calendar. But off-field challenges such as uncertainty over broadcasting delayed the season’s kick-off to November 22. The postponement has created logistical and training challenges for teams.

Gokulam Kerala head coach Antonio Rueda concerned about schedule

It’s difficult when plans are made based on a fixed start date, only to have that date shift. Clubs and players are left adjusting constantly,” added Rueda, who previously managed Churchill Brothers.

Available for posterity’s scrutiny was Gokulam Kerala goalkeeper Shibinraj K, who indeed shared the coach’s sentiment. “This pre-season has been unusually long compared to previous years. While the club has provided excellent facilities, it’s harder for coaches to maintain peak performance in such extended periods,” Shibinraj stated.

Despite the hurdles, Shibinraj praised the coaching staff for keeping players fit and motivated. “The team has adapted well, and we’re ready to give our best as the season finally begins,” he said.

After the long wait, the I-League kicks off on Friday, November 22. Last season’s runner-up, Sreenidi Deccan, will face Gokulam Kerala at the Deccan Arena, with the match set to begin at 4:30 PM IST.

The league’s administration has drawn many questions with the delayed start, but fans and players want action back in the fray. Gokulam Kerala’s opening clash is one that promises to set the tone for the season ahead.
