India Claims First Squash World Cup Title in Chennai Sweep

Anahat Singh added the final touches as India made history by defeating top seeds Hong Kong China in the final to win the Squash World Cup 2025 title at the Express Avenue Mall in Chennai on Sunday.

This victory marked India’s first Squash World Cup title, surpassing their previous best of a bronze medal in 2023. The Indian squash team, seeded second, did not lose any matches on their way to the title. They dominated Switzerland and Brazil with 4-0 scores in the group stage. In the quarter-finals, they took down South Africa and then defeated two-time winners Egypt 3-0 in the semi-finals, setting up a title match in the mixed-team squash event.

On Sunday, veteran Joshna Chinappa, ranked 79th in the PSA rankings, gave India a great start by stunning world No. 37 Lee Ka Yi 3-1 (7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1) in the opening women’s singles match. Asian Games medallist Abhay Singh, India’s highest-ranked men’s singles player at world No. 29, followed suit without missing a beat. He outplayed the 42nd-ranked Alex Lau 3-0 (7-1, 7-4, 7-4) in just 19 minutes, giving India a 2-0 lead.
