OpenAI introduces free training program for teachers to learn AI and prompt engineering

In partnership with Common Sense Media, OpenAI has introduced a free training program for teachers to better understand artificial intelligence and prompt engineering. This effort was announced on Wednesday while preparing educators with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate AI in the classroom.

This step shows the efforts of OpenAI in promoting education through ChatGPT. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has become a massive global phenomenon for generating interest in the world of generative AI. Since the training was done on vast amounts of data, the technology produces almost human-like content. It helps users with tasks like essay drafts, completing assignments, and even entire stories.

However, its arrival mid-school year left many educators scrambling to address its potential for misuse. Concerns about cheating and plagiarism led to bans in some schools. Consequently, it prompted OpenAI to take action.

OpenAI appoints best-suited candidate to make sure teachers use free training program ‘responsibly’

As part of efforts aimed at encouraging ethical and appropriate use of AI in learning, OpenAI has appointed Leah Belsky to lead a new dedicated team. She served as an executive at Coursera. “My goal is to empower students and teachers with AI while ensuring that they use it responsibly,” said Belsky. Many parents believe AI skills are essential to future career success. Also, student adoption of ChatGPT is quite high.

The free training program runs from kindergarten to 12th-grade educators. It demonstrates how ChatGPT can assist in varied educational contexts. It shows teachers how to create lesson plans, handle classroom resources, and even streamline administrative tasks. The course features the first major offering of the two organization’s collaboration, hosted on Common Sense Media’s website.

OpenAI’s proactive approach shows its belief in the transformative role of AI in education. With this initiative, the company hopes to foster a generation of educators and pupils who can harness AI’s potential while navigating its challenges responsibly.
