Indian Railways Updates Passenger Fare Structure With Immediate Effect

The Indian Railways has rationalised its passenger fare structure with effect from today, with the objective of balancing affordability for passengers and sustainability of operations. Under the revised fare structure, there is no change in fares for suburban services and Season Tickets, including both suburban and non-suburban routes.

The revised fares applicable only on tickets booked on or after today. Tickets booked before not attract any additional charges, even if the journey is undertaken after the effective date.

Indian Railways Rationalised Passenger Fare Structure

For Ordinary Non-AC (Non-Suburban) services, fares rationalised in a graded manner across Second Class Ordinary, Sleeper Class Ordinary, and First Class Ordinary. In Second Class Ordinary, there is no increase in fare for journeys up to 215 kms to ensure that short-distance and daily commuters not impacted. For distances from 216 km to 750 km, the fare has increased by five rupees.

Further, the fare has increased by 10 rupees for distances between 751 kms and 1250 kms, 15 rupees for distances between 1251 kms and 1750 kms, and 20 rupees for distances between 1751 kms and 2250 kms.

1 paise/ km rate in Sleeper Class Ordinary and First Class Ordinary Trains

In Sleeper Class Ordinary and First Class Ordinary, fares revised uniformly at the rate of 1 paise per kilometre for non-suburban journeys, ensuring a gradual and limited increase in fares. In Mail and Express trains, the fare increase rationalised at two paise per kilometre across Non-AC and AC classes. This includes Sleeper Class, First Class, AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and AC First Class. 

The existing basic fares of major train services, including Tejas Rajdhani, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, and Tejas, among others revised as per the approved class-wise basic fare increases. The Indian Railways Ministry said that no changes made in reservation fees, superfast surcharges, or other ancillary charges, which will continue to be levied as per existing rules. It added that GST applicability remain unchanged, and fares continue to rounded off according to prevailing norms.
