Heavy rainfall disrupted life in Kolkata and nearby areas on Tuesday. Many places flooded with knee-deep water, causing traffic to come to a standstill. During the storm, five people electrocuted, showing the serious effects of the rainfall just days before Durga Puja celebrations start on September 27. Pictures revealed large parts of the city submerged, with water flowing into homes and residential complexes as roads covered.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Alipore recorded 239 mm of rain by 5:30 am, which increased to 247.4 mm by 6:30 am. The IMD bulletin confirmed a total of 247.5 mm of rain in the 24-hour period from 6:30 am on Monday to 6:30 am today.
The heaviest rainfall occurred in the southern and eastern areas of Kolkata. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) stated that Garia Kamdahari received 332 mm of rain in just a few hours, while Jodhpur Park had 285 mm, Kalighat 280.2 mm, Topsia 275 mm, Ballygunge 264 mm, and Chetla 262 mm.
Water collected in homes, railway lines, 5 Died
The flooding also affected railway operations in Kolkata. After the heavy rainfall, waterlogging occurred in the Howrah station yard, Sealdah South station yard, Chitpur North Cabin, several car sheds, and multiple areas of the Sealdah yard.
Waterlogged railway lines in the Howrah and Sealdah divisions forced authorities to terminate and adjust several suburban train services. Water pumps set up at various points, but water from nearby areas kept flowing back into the yards, making the pumping operations difficult. In addition, long-distance services impacted, with the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri, Howrah-Gaya, and Howrah-Jamalpur Vande Bharat Express trains rescheduled due to flooding in the Howrah division.
