The Kremlin dismissed Monday reports that President-elect Donald Trump had recently discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin the conflict in Ukraine, labeling the Trump-Putin call “completely false.” Spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the denial Monday amidst heightened international curiosity about Trump’s stance on Russia’s war with Ukraine, after his election victory last week.
According to The Washington Post,, which published sources that claim he reached out to Putin from his resort in Florida last Thursday, it indicated that Trump reminded Putin of the huge military deployment that had taken place by the United States in Europe and had shown readiness for further negotiations to solve the so-called crisis in Ukraine. The Kremlin, though promptly dismissed this report by classifying it as “fake news.“.
The suggestion of a Trump-Putin dialogue has left the world even more curious, considering earlier sentiments from Trump that he would be able to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war in just one day. Such promises notwithstanding, Trump has not been forthcoming on how he will make it possible within such an incredibly short time frame.
Trump-Putin call was fake despite Trump’s promise to sort war
The rumors of this phone call have arisen against the backdrop of rising speculations over Trump’s possible foreign policy course as he is readying to enter office. During his victory speech, Trump declared, “I won’t start wars—I’ll end them.” This stance hints at a potential departure from previous U.S. approaches toward conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky went to social media to offer a sunny tone in congratulating Trump, hoping this “historically landslide victory” will bode well for future U.S. involvement with the Ukraine crisis. Meanwhile, reports note Trump handed the phone over to tech mogul Elon Musk during the call; any potential policy discussions held between them have yet to be verified.
Both remain silent at this point, but questions now revolve around the direction of U.S. foreign policy with Trump’s new administration in place, hence remaining a piece to add to global intrigue as the conflict in Ukraine is left unanswered.
