With just over an hour left before his self-imposed deadline, US President Trump took a step back on Tuesday. He announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran after a direct request from Pakistan’s PM and military leader.
Trump explained that he decided to pause military action after discussions with Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. They urged him to hold off on attacks scheduled for that night.
U.S. and Iran agree for 2 week ceasefire
“Based on conversations with PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, and their request to hold off the destructive force heading to Iran tonight. I agree to suspend the bombing and attack for two weeks.
This will be a two-sided ceasefire. We already met and exceeded all military objectives. We close to finalizing a long-term peace agreement with Iran and achieving peace in the Middle East. We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which we believe can serve as a workable basis for negotiation.
Both countries accepts ceasing defensive operations
Minutes after Trump’s announcement, Iran accepted the ceasefire deal. In a post on the X, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, “If attacks against Iran stop, our armed forces cease their defensive operations.”
Araghchi also expressed thanks to his “dear brothers” Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir for their “tireless efforts” to end the conflict in the region.
