Dubai Police have arrested a beggar who owned three luxury cars and admitted to having a considerable personal fortune. The man, whose identity is unknown, manipulated public sympathy to ask for money before driving away in his high-end vehicles after his begging shifts at night.
Dubai Police Arrest Beggar With Luxury Cars
Authorities found thousands of Dirhams in his possession as part of a crackdown on begging during the holy month of Ramadan. Brigadier Ali Al Shamsi, head of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department, called the man’s tactics a “calculated performance” aimed at exploiting humanitarian feelings for financial gain.
“One individual collected 25,000 dirhams (about Rs 6.2 lakh) but continued to beg, despite having enough money to return home,” Shamsi said.
Calculated Exploitation of Public Sympathy
As part of the crackdown, police arrested over 26 beggars from various nationalities. Shamsi noted that 90 % of those arrested entered the country on visit visas, particularly during the holy month, to take advantage of public generosity.
In the UAE, individuals caught begging can face up to three months in jail and a fine of 5,000 dirhams. Those who run organized begging operations or recruit people from abroad face much harsher penalties, including at least six months in jail and fines of at least 100,000 dirhams.
