Is the H-1B US Visa a scam? Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and several other Republicans think so. During an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, DeSantis called the H-1B a “total scam.” He argued that it allows companies to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labor, primarily from India.
H-1B US Visa affects job of Americans
DeSantis claimed that companies often forced American employees to train H-1B workers before laying them off. He emphasized that most H-1B workers come from India, mentioning a “cottage industry” around how those individuals profit from this system.
He noted that artificial intelligence has already started displacing young American workers and questioned why the country should “import foreign workers when we have our own people that we need to take care of.”
When questioned about disagreements within Donald Trump’s cabinet regarding the policy, DeSantis responded, “I think you’re right to say that the H-1B has become a total scam. These companies game the system. Some of these companies are laying off large numbers of Americans while hiring new H-1B workers and renewing existing H-1B visas.” Supporters of the program argue that the visas help fill gaps in the US labor market, especially in the fields of science and technology.
Will immigration system changed?
DeSantis’ comments coincided with Lutnick’s announcement that the administration was planning changes to the immigration system, including the H-1B and green card processes. Lutnick also tweeted on Tuesday that the H-1B US Visa was a scam.
He proposed a “gold card” plan that would grant residency to foreigners who invest $5 million in the US. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s position on the H-1B visa has been quite inconsistent. He criticized it as president while also using it to staff his own businesses.
