A fire incident happened at a Hindu home in Gowainghat, located in the Sylhet district of eastern Bangladesh. The fire started at the house of Bikash Ranjan Deb, a teacher at Gowainghat High School, at 3:50 PM local time on Thursday.
Fire erupts in Bangladesh at Hindu Teacher Home
After investigating the site, police sub-inspector Didar reported by phone that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. The homeowner, Bikash Ranjan Deb, also told the police that he has no personal or family enemies and that both Hindus and Muslims live harmoniously in the area. He believes the incident was simply an accident due to the short circuit.
After the fire, the police from Gowainghat visited Bikash Ranjan Deb’s home and spoke with him. They recorded a video of their conversation, where Bikash Ranjan Deb said that around 5 million takas’ worth of belongings were destroyed in the fire. However, he does not blame anyone for what happened, as he feels he has no enemies.
Why Hindus is at risk?
He thinks the fire started from an electrical short circuit. Thanks to local residents and the fire service, the fire was controlled, which helped prevent further damage. This incident occurs amid a wave of communal violence in the country.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the ongoing attacks against minorities in Bangladesh. He emphasized the need to respond to these incidents quickly and firmly during the weekly press briefing.
When asked about the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, the MEA spokesperson said, “We continue to witness a disturbing pattern of recurring attacks on minorities as well as their homes and businesses by extremists in Bangladesh. Such communal incidents need to be addressed quickly and firmly.”
