A big Magnitude 6.8 earthquake sent tremors off the coast of Riverton in New Zealand on Tuesday, said the United States Geological Survey. The quake, which to begin with was recorded, struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off the southwest tip of the South Island, the USGS stated. So a long way, no tsunami warning has been issued for the location.
According to the USGS website, there had been inexperienced alerts for shaking-related fatalities and financial losses, according to which it has concluded that there are low chances of casualties and damage. Further, it stated that the population living in the quake-hit region stays in structures that can be rather resistant to earthquakes, with the top of some susceptible systems.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s emergency management company said that it was “assessing whether or not the earthquake has created a tsunami that could have an effect on” country.
In a countrywide advisory, the company stated, “If a tsunami has been generated in this region it isn’t always possibly to reach in New Zealand for as a minimum one hour.” Earlier, a 6.3 magnitude that struck Christchurch in 2011 had killed 185 people. According to USGS the eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most seismically active areas of the world due to the high rates of convergence among the Australia and Pacific plates.
Earthquake due to Boundary extension
In New Zealand, it stated, the 3000 km-long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It cause Magnitude 6.8 earthquake . Since 1900, around 15 cases of magnitude 7.5 plus earthquakes have been recorded near New Zealand. 9 of those, and the 4 largest ones, came about close to the Macquarie Ridge, along with the 1989’s damaging 8.2 magnitude on the ridge itself.
