German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat for a two-day official visit to India. This marks his first trip to Asia since taking office. Prime Minister Modi welcomed Chancellor Merz at the iconic Sabarmati Ashram, where they reviewed the progress of the ashram’s redevelopment project.

After their discussions at the ashram, PM and Chancellor Merz traveled together in the same vehicle to the Sabarmati Riverfront. The Prime Minister set to open the International Kite Festival 2026 at the riverfront later today, coinciding with the Uttarayan festival.
There is speculation that the two leaders might join the festivities by flying kites together, delighting kite enthusiasts from India and abroad who are participating in the event.

Chancellor Merz’s visit aims to strengthen India-Germany relations in key areas, including trade, investment, defense, and critical technologies. Bilateral talks are also planned, and discussions expected to address various aspects of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
