Palestine ceasefire begins today but Netanyahu says it is only temporary

The long-awaited Palestine ceasefire starts Sunday at 8:30 a.m. local time, however, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns that it will only be temporary. The so-called ceasefire was signed following intense negotiations brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. The agreement, which brings an end to 15 months of unrelenting conflict between Israel and Hamas, will make way for the release of dozens of hostages being held in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinian detainees held in Israeli detention.

Palestine ceasefire begins at 8:00 am local, but it will be temporary, says Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a speech to the nation that the ceasefire was being seen as only a preliminary agreement. Netanyahu told the country that Israel still holds its ground to resume military activities if needed, and he pointed to President-elect Donald Trump for support. Netanyahu attributed Israel’s military victories in Lebanon and Syria to forcing Hamas to accept the cease-fire, insisting, “We have changed the face of the Middle East.”

Despite Cabinet approval of the agreement early Saturday, the ceasefire faces political challenges within Israel. Far-right Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said his party intends to resign from the government over the deal.

This is the second truce sealed since the ruinous conflict commenced following Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, on southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking hostage around 250, 100 of them still being detained in Gaza.

Local health officials estimate that over 46,000 Palestinians have died due to the Israeli military action. Among the victims, women and children made up more than half, in addition to the militants.

With the ceasefire taking place in Gaza, international mediators hope this may mark a way toward further de-escalation. Netanyahu’s statement does indicate some lingering uncertainty regarding the longevity of the truce.
