Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday reacted to US President Donald Trump’s declaration of a more than 25 % tariff on Indian goods, calling it “economic blackmail” aimed at pushing India into an unfair trade deal.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the move could damage Indian exporters and affect bilateral trade. “Trump’s 50% tariff is financial blackmail, a try to bully India into an unfair trade deal,” Gandhi said in a post on X.
Rahul Gandhi said 25% extra tariffs as economic blackmail
“PM Modi better not let his weakness override the history of the Indian humans,” he said. Donald Trump also imposed a 25 % tariff on Indian items in response to India’s persistent oil trade with Russia, and straining ties with a key Asian partner.
According to the White House, Trump signed a government order on Wednesday to put in force the new tariff, so as to bring to the 25 % responsibility he had announced on Indian imports last week. The accelerated tariff is ready to take effect in 21 days.
The tariff statement by Trump came just hours after talks between Washington and Moscow over the war in Ukraine failed to make progress. “They’re fueling the battle system. And in the event that they’re going to do this, then I’m not going to glad,” Trump said Tuesday in an interview with CNBC.
USA targets India over Russian oil purchases
India has defended the U. S’s purchase of Russian oil, saying India is unfairly targeted by the USA and that such imports vital for assisting the home economy.
Rahul Gandhi termed Donald Trump’s statement “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” including that the authorities “ take all moves vital to protects its country history.” Earlier, Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor had said the pass may want to make Indian items unaffordable in the United States market and affect exports.
