Iran and Israel exchanged missiles on Saturday morning after Tel Aviv, with US assistance, launched a preemptive attack on Tehran. This escalated tensions in the Middle East and further lowered hopes for a diplomatic resolution.
US-Israel Attack on Iran
The Israeli military said that an “additional barrage of missiles” was fired toward Israel. “The Aerial Defense Array is currently identifying and intercepting threats. Sirens sounded in several areas across the country after missiles were detected coming from Iran. At this time, the IAF is working to intercept and strike threats where needed to eliminate the danger,” the military said.
Sirens blared in Tel Aviv as Israel warned of a “possible missile attack.” NDTV’s Aditya Raj Kaul was live from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport when the air raid alerts went off across the city. “We don’t know if this is due to a missile attack or a rocket sighting, but this is the latest information we have,” he reported. He quickly took cover inside the airport, and the sirens stopped shortly thereafter.
Trump announce major combat operations
US President Donald Trump announced “major combat operations” in Iran shortly after Israel launched strikes on Tehran with US support. According to Trump, the purpose of these operations is to “protect the American people by removing imminent threats from Iran.”
Labeling Iran as the world’s “number one state sponsor of terror,” Trump said, “For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted, ‘Death to America,’ and has run an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder, targeting the United States, our troops, and innocent people in many countries.
