US President Donald Trump defended his tariff policy again. He claimed that these aggressive taxes made the United States the “richest” and “most respected” country in the world. He called his opponents “fools” and said that every American—except the wealthy—will soon receive at least $2,000 (around Rs 1,77,000) from the tariff revenues collected by his administration.
His comments came days after the US Supreme Court expressed doubts about the legality of Trump’s sweeping tariffs. This case has significant implications for the global economy and tests Trump’s powers.
What Trump Said
“People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the richest, most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation and a record stock market price. 401ks are the highest EVER. We are bringing in trillions of dollars and will soon begin paying down our enormous debt, $37 trillion,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
“Record investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people) will be paid to everyone,” he added.
US Top Court On Tariffs
Trump’s comments followed sharp questioning from both conservative and liberal justices of the Supreme Court last week. They asked the lawyer representing Trump administration whether the president had overstepped his authority by imposing tariffs under a 1977 law meant for national emergencies.
However, some conservative justices suggested they were struggling with the recognition of the inherent power presidents have in dealings with foreign countries. It shows that the court could be sharply divided in its decision. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority.
