President Donald Trump signed a memorandum directing the US to withdraw from 66 international organizations and treaties. This includes the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
US Withdraw from UN Climate Convention, as per Trump Orders
This means the US, the largest historical polluter, will completely withdraw from the global climate change agreement and scientific assessment. It also means the US will not fulfill its responsibilities in addressing climate change.
“President Trump’s withdrawal of the US from the global treaty aimed at tackling climate change is a new low. It shows that this anti-science administration is willing to sacrifice people’s well-being and disrupt global cooperation. However, forward-thinking U.S and the rest of the world recognize that the devastating impacts of climate change are rapidly increasing. So working together globally is the only possible way to secure a livable future for our children and grandchildren.
Will withdrawal from global climate convention leave US Isolate?
Leaving the global climate convention will further isolate the US and reduce its influence in the world, following a series of actions that have already damaged our nation’s credibility, stressed relationships with close allies, and made the world less safe,” said Rachel Cleetus, policy director and lead economist for the Climate and Energy Program.
“Pulling out of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is a serious mistake that sacrifices American advantages without any benefits. This 30-year-old agreement is the basis for international climate cooperation. Leaving doesn’t just put America on the sidelines; it removes the U.S. from the entire discussion. American communities and businesses will fall behind as other countries seize the jobs, wealth, and trade opportunities created by the growing clean energy economy,” said David Widawsky, Director of the World Resources Institute, US.
