Ukraine-Russia-US Talks in Abu Dhabi Focus on Territorial Issues

Ukraine-Russia-US Talks focus on territory as the United States pushes for an agreement to end the nearly four-year war.

The discussions in Abu Dhabi on Friday marked the first public negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv under a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump’s administration to resolve the conflict.

Ukraine-Russia-US Talks held in Abu Dhabi

“The talks started today in Abu Dhabi and will continue over two days as part of ongoing efforts to encourage dialogue and find political solutions to the crisis,” the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned that territorial disputes would be a key topic but emphasized that “the most important thing is that Russia should be ready to end this war, which it started.”

In a statement shared on Telegram, Zelenskyy noted he was in regular touch with the Ukrainian delegation but felt it was too early to draw conclusions from Friday’s discussions.

How does this conversation results?

“We’ll see how the conversation goes tomorrow and what the outcome will be,” he said. The Ukraine-Russia-US Talks in the Emirati capital happened a day after Zelenskyy met with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and just hours after US envoy Steve Witkoff had late-night discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

Reporting from Moscow, Al Jazeera’s Yulia Shapovalova said the talks between Putin and Witkoff lasted nearly four hours but did not resolve the main issues preventing a deal, specifically territorial disputes and security guarantees.

“Russia demands that the Ukrainian army leave the Donbas region, which is unacceptable to Ukraine,” Shapovalova explained.
