The United States is set to send aircraft to a key military base in Greenland, as per the US military. This decision comes as tensions rise over President Donald Trump’s attempts to acquire the Arctic territory.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command said that aircraft “will soon arrive” at the Pituffik Space Base. This deployment will support planned defense operations in the region.
Military Aircraft Deployed to Greenland
“Along with aircraft from bases in the continental United States and Canada, they will support various NORAD activities,” the command said in a post on X, mentioning ongoingdefense cooperation with Canada and Denmark. NORAD emphasized that this activity was coordinated with Denmark and that Greenland’s government had been informed beforehand. The military did not specify when the aircraft would arrive. However, the timing has drawn attention as Trump increases pressure on European allies over Greenland.
Tariffs threats increase pressure on Europe
Trump has threatened significant tariffs starting at 10 % on February 1 and escalating to 25 percent by June. These tariffs would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland unless the United States is permitted to buy Greenland. He mentioned that the tariffs would stay in place until a deal is reached.
The US President’s comments have sparked a strong political reaction across Europe. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said on Monday that Greenland “is not for sale.”
