The USA Cancels 85,000 visas since January. It reflects the Trump administration’s steep increase in immigration enforcement and its aim for stricter national-security checks.
In a post on X, the department said, “85,000 visa revocations since January. President Trump and Secretary Rubio follow one simple mandate, and they won’t stop anytime soon.” The post included an image of Trump alongside the slogan “Make America Safe Again.” This clearly shows that visa crackdowns are a key part of the administration’s security focus.
USA Cancels 85,000 visas
A State Department official noted that the numbers include over 8,000 student visas, which is double last year’s figure. The official indicated that the main reasons for revocations were DUIs, assaults, and theft. These accounted for nearly half of the revocations over the past year. The official added that these offenses indicate “people who pose a direct threat to our communities’ safety.”
Officials did not reveal the other reasons for revocations, but have previously mentioned visa overstays, criminal issues, and support for terrorism. CNN reported that the administration has increasingly targeted international students who took part in campus protests about Gaza. Some of these students are accused of antisemitism or supporting extremist groups.
Tightens immigration and security issues
The rise in visa cancellations occurs as the administration broadens its policy of ongoing checks for all 55 million foreign nationals with valid visas. USA Cancels 85,000 visas and limits travel from 19 countries, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is now suggesting that this list expand to 30 or 32 countries. This follows the charging of an Afghan national in a shooting that injured two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.
In the last week, the administration has tightened several other immigration channels. USCIS announced that it would review green card applications from individuals in “countries of concern.”
