20 people died and several others have been injured after a passenger bus crashed into a gravel truck on the Hyderabad-Bijapur highway this morning. The accident occurred in Rangareddy district, Telangana, about 60 km from Hyderabad.
The bus, owned by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, had around 70 passengers on board. It was traveling from Tandur in Vikarabad district to Hyderabad when it struck a truck carrying construction materials. Gravel from the truck fell into the bus, burying several passengers.
20 dead in Telangana bus accident
Those killed in the accident include a 10-month-old baby, 10 women, and the drivers of both vehicles. Many injured passengers were taken to a government hospital. Some are in critical condition, according to reports.
Heartbreaking scenes showed people trapped under the gravel crying for help. Police and rescue workers struggled to pull out the injured. Rescue teams had to cut through the bus to recover the bodies. The driver and the six rows behind his seat were the most affected. Most passengers in this area of the bus died on impact.
CM express condolences
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has expressed sadness over the accident and has instructed officials to go to the scene immediately to assist with rescue and relief efforts.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has contacted the road transport corporation’s Managing Director, Y Nagireddy, to discuss the cause of the accident. He also asked the Rangareddy district collector to ensure the injured receive proper medical care.
